Not Just A Kitchen

Cooking didn’t come naturally to me, unlike others, because I learned how to peel a potato and garlic at the ripe ole age of something like twenty-four or so. My mom never gave the chance to cook….it’s her fault for pampering me. Ok, fine….it was me. But I wasn’t lazy, it’s just that I am not that good with a knife, wok, pan, spatula, spoon, fork…..OK, fine….I was just too plain lazy to get off my ass to do any form of labor….especially not in the KITCHEN. (You crazy ah?) But now that I am older and am responsible for the food that goes into my kids’ tummies, I have a different stance about the kitchen. If army people had their own fortress, the kitchen is my fortress. And yet, it’s also my spa because I find complete relaxation in cooking. No, it’s not because it can spend some time with the fellow garlics and bawangs (onions)….it’s just relaxing to try to come up with something nice to eat. I am not a finicky eater but I like to eat good food whenever I get the chance to…make sense? If I feel like eating char-siew today, I make char-siew. If I feel like eating noodles today, I make noodles. If I feel like a ham sandwich, a dish of pasta or spaghetti, I make it. No questions asked….I mean, this is complete control we’re talking about here, man!! :-) How many of you, who are not living with your family members, can say that you get to eat whatever you feel like eating the moment you feel like eating it? But then again, I know of some people who call their mothers or maids ahead of time and tell them to dish it out before the car rolls into the driveway lah….that’s a different story altogether. When I have no time, I put things into the oven. I tell you, the oven is one of the most amazing things invented on EARTH. The steamer is too! By golly, all you have to do is to prepare the stuff and then stuff them into the steamer or the oven and wait for food to cook! I mean….that’s the lazy man’s way to getting what you want to eat, but so what? I am totally unabashed about it. Most importantly, whenever I get stressed out about washing the dishes, all I have to do is to lift my head and look out….right there….the most acclaimed parts of Petaling Jaya rolls out in front of me. It’s as if I am a part of it, but not in it. My mind sometimes wonder and then by the time I return to the present, the dishes are clean! What more can I ask for – I’ve got a kitchen with a view. OK, fine....it's not the best view but what the heck....not a lot of people have a view at all from their kitchen, right or not? :-)

I love your kitchen view! Can get dreamy while washing plates huh. Mine is awful...well, it just looks out at the neighbour's place. My new place will be much better. But only moving to new place mid of this year. My mom-in-law's one just looks out to the garden and the neighbour's back yard.

A Liberating Activity - Guess What Mine Is....

When asked what’s my one single favorite thing to do in the world, I would usually name a whole list of things that I love to do when my work is not screaming at me. Something that takes my mind COMPLETELY off of everyday tasks and relaxes me. Take a guess what it is…. If you say ‘ reading ’, yes, I love reading (especially soppy love stories with lots of sex scenes, please. Hee hee hee ….) and I also love mystery novels but it’s not the first on the list. If you say ‘ playing the piano ’; yes, I love playing the piano. Creating forms a huge part of my life and whenever I play the piano (as inept at it as I am), there’s this tiny little girl inside of me jumping up and down with glee, clapping her hands. It’s my childhood dream to be able to play the piano! And thumping on the keys gives me a sense of satisfaction when I hear the music. If you say ‘ writing ’; You’ve got to be kidding me! You mean I don’t write enough as it is? Case closed. If you say ‘ playing with my kids ’; Yea...

Malaysian Election 2008 - Malaysians ready for change

The political wrestle is over, here in Malaysia, and thankfully too because it earned me a hangove from watching the news, and reading all the readily available blogs on cyberspace all night long. With a spilting headache from squinting into the PC screen, watching the TV for news on the results from the ballot boxes, anxiety, uncertainty and HOPE lingers in the air..... BN, our ruling party in Malaysia, who has been flexing its political muscles for a long time now with the confident (and ever sleepy and gay) PM convincing Malaysians that BN is the only way to peace. Opposition cannot hold the fort properly, though, because the formation and coalition between them is too loose. But with BN denied the 2/3 majority it needed, all I can say is that Pak Lah tore a tendon while flexing his political muscles. Fed up, fed up, fed up - Malaysians are fed up A lot of Malaysians chose not to vote for the oppositition IN THE PAST because we wanted unity, we resisted change because of a date w...

Demanding a Balanced Lifestyle

We live in a world choked with demands….demand for more money, better lifestyle, more holidays, smarter kids, bigger house, posher cars….etc. People walk around with spiritually unimportant goals in their minds driven by the need to succeed and be better than others around them. Hong Kong. South Korea. Japan. Most Asian countries suffer from this ill-fate which have caused a horrific rise in the number of suicide rates in the said countries. Malaysia is no exception as well although we’re very slowly gaining ground on our neighbors. Just picking up my son from school can become a stressful affair. I’ve mentioned this to a few friends of mine over the phone and all of them cluck their tongue shake their head. It’s end of the year and the kids are getting their test results back by now. I overheard a couple of tai-tais (housewives) gripe about their kids’ results. Mom: I don’t know-lah. My kid did not do very well this term. The best also got 95 only. (NINETY FIVE ONLY???) ...
