Kids Emotional Blackmail

A kid just shared a secret with me. Both this kid and his sister confided in me that if they can't get their parents to buy something for them, all the have to do is start crying and kick up a fuss! The more fuss you kick up, the more distressed the parents will be and the faster you will get the thing you want! I looked at them shell-shocked into silence. Huh? They had sly smiles on their faces. No wonder the siblings are famous for their 'tears'....sigh. I shook my finger, shook my head at them and told them that if my kids were to show me something like that, even if I've decided to buy it for them in the first place, they'll negative points for such emotional blackmail. No way on heaven, earth, universe, hell, paradise....etc will I get anything ANYTHING for them if they resort to emotional blackmail. Crying and kicking up a fuss, my kids know, is a one-way-ticket to nowhere. Gosh, all I know right now is that 'thank goodness' they're not my kids. But I laid down the rules here in my house....no kicking up a fuss. It will earn you burnt cookie points. Sheesh....I just hope their parents wake up

My kids have never used emotional blackmail on me but I must say, I am one who is quick to buy them something as soon as they mention it. I am what my dad was with us. We only have to mention something we like, my dad will get us in the car and take us to get what we want, even a bicycle. I can't say we were spoilt but I know with my son, he has not learnt to wait for things as he always had it when he wanted, WHICH I NOW THINK COULD BE PARTLY MY FAULT. :(

jamie, *blink blink* who??

judy, i am also like you a little bit lah....but if i say no and give a reason, they cannot object. and if they kick up a fuss, lagi no hope!! but normally leh, i will buy. they either have to earn it with 'stars' (good behavior or 100% in school work) or with patience.

I dont think I want them growing up thinking that the world owes them anything.

A Liberating Activity - Guess What Mine Is....

When asked what’s my one single favorite thing to do in the world, I would usually name a whole list of things that I love to do when my work is not screaming at me. Something that takes my mind COMPLETELY off of everyday tasks and relaxes me. Take a guess what it is…. If you say ‘ reading ’, yes, I love reading (especially soppy love stories with lots of sex scenes, please. Hee hee hee ….) and I also love mystery novels but it’s not the first on the list. If you say ‘ playing the piano ’; yes, I love playing the piano. Creating forms a huge part of my life and whenever I play the piano (as inept at it as I am), there’s this tiny little girl inside of me jumping up and down with glee, clapping her hands. It’s my childhood dream to be able to play the piano! And thumping on the keys gives me a sense of satisfaction when I hear the music. If you say ‘ writing ’; You’ve got to be kidding me! You mean I don’t write enough as it is? Case closed. If you say ‘ playing with my kids ’; Yea...

At Camp 5, 1 Utama: Kids' Rescue Mission

The kids had a wonderfully exciting day today. Now, this is as extreme as this mother is going to get. Mommy goes Paintball, kids go mountain-climbing...I think I've fulfilled the criteria of offering my kids a fun and exciting life as a kid. :-) It was one of their friends' birthday party and they're a little bored of KidzSports...that's for BABIES, anyway, they say. So, off to Camp 5 then, says the birthday boy's mother. Camp 5 in 1 Utama is located near Neways Karaoke, for those who have never been there before. It's a neat little corner tucked up on the roof of the massive shopping complex. Anyway, the kids had tons of fun although a little apprhensive when they saw how high the 'rock' was. It's actually quite neat and if I didn't feel like throwing up whenever up on higher grounds, I would have wanted to try it as well. The highlight of this party came in the form of a rescue mission. As we all know, when one is frighte...

Demanding a Balanced Lifestyle

We live in a world choked with demands….demand for more money, better lifestyle, more holidays, smarter kids, bigger house, posher cars….etc. People walk around with spiritually unimportant goals in their minds driven by the need to succeed and be better than others around them. Hong Kong. South Korea. Japan. Most Asian countries suffer from this ill-fate which have caused a horrific rise in the number of suicide rates in the said countries. Malaysia is no exception as well although we’re very slowly gaining ground on our neighbors. Just picking up my son from school can become a stressful affair. I’ve mentioned this to a few friends of mine over the phone and all of them cluck their tongue shake their head. It’s end of the year and the kids are getting their test results back by now. I overheard a couple of tai-tais (housewives) gripe about their kids’ results. Mom: I don’t know-lah. My kid did not do very well this term. The best also got 95 only. (NINETY FIVE ONLY???) ...
