I've been on Twitter since June 2008, making it 14 year old. Since I am not an influencer neither am I famous, my number of followers on Twitter have stagnated for quite a couple of years now. I think my engagement rate sucks pretty bad too.
But still, I stayed on because I liked listening to what people had to say about the happenings all around the world.
It gets mad-crazy sometimes but mostly, it's easy to ignore the stuff you don't want to see on Twitter. Just scroll away. It makes life easier. I loved the initial idea of Twitter giving everyone a voice and a platform to voice their concerns, share their ideas, connect with other people, speak their minds, promote their works or business freely and fairly.
That was the original idea.
Then let's talk about the whole Musk takeover. It really did not bother me that much when Elon Musk announced a potential takeover. So what? As long as it remains the way it is for the rest of us without the blue checkmarks, there's no reason for me to care.
But what I see now is a move to turn Twitter into something of a Truth Social. It doesn't affect me, for real, because I don't want to or have to pay $8 for revered blue check mark. Makes no difference for me.
However, there are discussions and talks about putting up a paywall, a blatant mass-firing of people without proper notice given, and Musk himself stirring up a sh*tstorm just for the sake of stirring it up leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Truth be told, it's been 14 years on Twitter and I've felt a little bored with it for a while. It's hard to see who is genuine, kind, compassionate, and real there. I've been chided for saying something there before but I've learned the ultimate social skill of being online and speaking out - ignoring them.
But this also means that I am not being real. I cannot tell you the sheer number of times I hesitated to say something on Twitter because I am afraid of the backlash. I say mostly nice things so that I don't get called out, or when someone checks my Twitter, they think I am a nutcase.
So, what has this platform turned into.
And now the Twitstorm has begun, I think I might want to seriously consider using another platform, one that will give me a restart.
Some prominent people, celebrities, and news people are already hopping onto Mastodon. I've never heard of this platform before but you can read more about it here. Basically, it is not controlled by one giant organization. Instead, it is an open source software that is housed in servers in decentralized structure. You can choose the server you want and connect with people within the Fediverse.
I'll leave the techie stuff to geek-smart people but I've created my account here. The link is https://mindly.social/@marshamaung so, the server that I've chosen is mindly.social. There are reportedly tens of thousands of servers to choose from, or you can even create your own server.
It's a little complicated, I know. As opposed to having a Twitter.com/marshamaung handle and url, now, everyone's everywhere and things are a little messy right now. But as with anything new, this is the learning curve I am steering around in.
