This also explains why I can only listen to the local radio stations for a few hours before I start tuning out and have to listen to something else.
The evolution of music has taken us from diversity to cookie-cutter music although I have to admit that DO listen to them sometimes and am besotted by their trendiness and catchiness but there is a limit to it.
Before any Kpop or EDM music lovers say anything, yes, it includes those too. I mean, there are very few Kpop or EDM stars and producers who try to do anything different. They stick to what is working all the time because...it's working. And if it's working, it's safe and it's making money so, why change?
But that defeats the purpose of making music. Although it sells, it has lost its original purpose of inspiring individuals with lyrical significance, interesting combination of instruments, diversity of levels in terms of listening pleasure and there's no longer much effort being put to making music...music. Some have come to turn music-making into money-making machines and that's the opinion of many other music lovers as well. I am quite sure I am not the only one who feels this way.
Suffice to say, those in the music industry have also been milking the oldest trick in the book...sex sells. One of the reasons I am turned off by the advertising and singing industry, I have turned on my heels and strode off into the sunset by pulling a Johnny Depp. The more you want me to be hot, the less I want to be. LOL. And I don't give a shit because you can't sue me and all people can do is talk behind our backs.
Aaaannnyyyyywaaayyyy....back to the music industry. Here are some reasons why modern music has become worse and worse over the years, with many resorting to the quick four-chord solution to produce some of the 'latest hits' permeating our airwaves today.
We, in fact, may have been subjected to the Mere-exposure effect, cue Dess....pa...cito! It is a psychological effect that exposes subjects to a stimuli on a repeated basis until they start thinking 'Hey, it's not that bad. It's growing on me'. Ta-da! Like magic.
While there is no harm in liking and falling for the latest musical trend, as mentioned in the video, protecting creativity and originality is important. More so today than ever before where things are designed to sell but not inspire.
XOXO,
Marsha
