Taugeh - The Most Profitable Dish

In Malaysia, the most expensive vegetable you can find in the market is...the taugeh. The bean sprouts.

Nah. Just kidding! =)

Actually, the bean sprouts is actually the CHEAPEST vegetable in the wet market and they are always out of stock by 10.00am in the market that I go to. You can get a whole bucket of it with RM1 so, normally, RM0.30 is enough for us here.

Recently, I went out to eat with a couple of friends and I was eyeing the bean sprouts cooked with soya sauce and sesame seed oil. The cost was RM6.90 for the dish....with no meat whatsoever in it, it costs RM6.90. Amazing. I bet, in the owner's prayers every single night, he is asking God to have people pouring into his restaurant asking for bean sprouts. The profit margin is simply too unimaginable.

We're paying RM6.90 to have the cooks boil a pot of water, wash the bean sprouts, blanch it and then mix some soya sauce together with some sesame seed oil and then toss it all together with some shredded carrots and green onion. Fab. And shredded carrots and green onion will not RM6.90 make this dish.

That is why I am such a big advocate of cooking and eating at home. I mean, the cost of the dish is probably less than RM1.50, for Heaven's sake. So, no matter how busy I am during the day, I make sure I make time to cook a little something for our meals. It doesn't even have to be complicated. If you simplified things and stop being such a whiny wimp about what you eat (and think health along the way), you could save some money while benefiting from it all.

And I love cooking. It is almost only the outlet I have to get creative and imagining. Not that I am a fab cook coz sometimes it sucks too, but it happens when I am impassioned about life, work, kids,s bills, responsibilities, etc. If I snap myself out of that form of thinking and worrying, I actually create quite edible things.

Just saying. =)

Taugeh is my mother's favorite vegetable. hahaha. For some reason I don't fancy it in dishes except when it's included in the "cekodok ikan bilis". And I wouldn't even want to order a taugeh in soya sauce and sesame oil preparation for RM7! But then again maybe it's just because I am not a fan of taugeh! BTW Happy belated new year to you Marsh! =)

Drinks also have a high profit margin. My mum always says that a small packet of soya bean can produce a huge pot of soya bean milk that sells for an average of RM1.20 per cup. This is why I never order drinks whenever I eat out.

Julie, me too! I usually order water only. If kids ask for soya bean milk, I tell them that I will get a huge packet and give them at home. Only RM2 for one big packet of soya bean mar....can split 5-6 cups. ceh... :-)

A Liberating Activity - Guess What Mine Is....

When asked what’s my one single favorite thing to do in the world, I would usually name a whole list of things that I love to do when my work is not screaming at me. Something that takes my mind COMPLETELY off of everyday tasks and relaxes me. Take a guess what it is…. If you say ‘ reading ’, yes, I love reading (especially soppy love stories with lots of sex scenes, please. Hee hee hee ….) and I also love mystery novels but it’s not the first on the list. If you say ‘ playing the piano ’; yes, I love playing the piano. Creating forms a huge part of my life and whenever I play the piano (as inept at it as I am), there’s this tiny little girl inside of me jumping up and down with glee, clapping her hands. It’s my childhood dream to be able to play the piano! And thumping on the keys gives me a sense of satisfaction when I hear the music. If you say ‘ writing ’; You’ve got to be kidding me! You mean I don’t write enough as it is? Case closed. If you say ‘ playing with my kids ’; Yea...

At Camp 5, 1 Utama: Kids' Rescue Mission

The kids had a wonderfully exciting day today. Now, this is as extreme as this mother is going to get. Mommy goes Paintball, kids go mountain-climbing...I think I've fulfilled the criteria of offering my kids a fun and exciting life as a kid. :-) It was one of their friends' birthday party and they're a little bored of KidzSports...that's for BABIES, anyway, they say. So, off to Camp 5 then, says the birthday boy's mother. Camp 5 in 1 Utama is located near Neways Karaoke, for those who have never been there before. It's a neat little corner tucked up on the roof of the massive shopping complex. Anyway, the kids had tons of fun although a little apprhensive when they saw how high the 'rock' was. It's actually quite neat and if I didn't feel like throwing up whenever up on higher grounds, I would have wanted to try it as well. The highlight of this party came in the form of a rescue mission. As we all know, when one is frighte...

Demanding a Balanced Lifestyle

We live in a world choked with demands….demand for more money, better lifestyle, more holidays, smarter kids, bigger house, posher cars….etc. People walk around with spiritually unimportant goals in their minds driven by the need to succeed and be better than others around them. Hong Kong. South Korea. Japan. Most Asian countries suffer from this ill-fate which have caused a horrific rise in the number of suicide rates in the said countries. Malaysia is no exception as well although we’re very slowly gaining ground on our neighbors. Just picking up my son from school can become a stressful affair. I’ve mentioned this to a few friends of mine over the phone and all of them cluck their tongue shake their head. It’s end of the year and the kids are getting their test results back by now. I overheard a couple of tai-tais (housewives) gripe about their kids’ results. Mom: I don’t know-lah. My kid did not do very well this term. The best also got 95 only. (NINETY FIVE ONLY???) ...
