Korean Kim Chi or Taiwan Kim Chi or Malaysia Ahchat

Many Asian countries have their very own version of Kimchi but don't know why, Korean kimchi got the world talking. Maybe it's because Korean kimchi has the strongest aroma, the sourest among the lot. But actually, if you taste a real Korean kimchi, you won't think it's as bad as people say it is. Foreigners will have a tough time trying to like the dish but Malaysians and people from other Asian countries shouldn't lor. I mean, Malaysia also got our local ah-chat which is fantabulous!! It's sweet, sour, salty ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Korean Kimchi is almost part of my staple diet since not only does the Korean BBQ restaurant sell them, so does the Western deli and also a resident of the condo opposite of my house! So, as far as Korean kimchi is concerned, I can get my hands on them with only one phone call. Yesterday, I suddenly found a Taiwanese restaurant. I tah-powed some food....YUM YUM YUM!!!!! I saw they had Taiwanese Kimchi as well, so, being the curious bugger that I am, I ordered one lor. I don't know lah, maybe I am biased towards Korean kimchi but the Taiwanese Kimchi is a little bit salty because they use 'salted cabbage' (kiam-cai) to make wor. The absence of spring onion also makes the smell a little stronger. So, what's your take? Korean kimchi, Taiwanese kimchi or Malaysian Ah-Chat?

My Taiwanese wife and I are big kimchi fans. She makes great Taiwanese kimchi - it needs some sugar in there as well as salt and it needs to be freshly made or it just goes all soggy and horrible. The final result should be crispy and vinegary. That's how we like it.

It's hard to compare with Korean kimchi because they are so very different. We like them both - a lot! Delicious in different ways.

naruwan, hhhmmm....must try another taiwanese restaurant for a different type of kimchi. i think they taste different depending on the chef. the one I tried wasn't all that good, really. yeah, kimchi has to be crispy, if not....BLERGH!

jamie, HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I dont mind having kimchi day in day out. yeah, koreans have kimchi for everything...including breakfast and dessert! poor you. some people really cannot tahan wan leh. that's why when koreans go to other countries, they daydream about their kimchi...and start their own korean restaurants. as with the korean restaurant owners opposite my house where i get my dose of kimchi.

I like ah chat with the peanuts. It's much less sour than the kimchi's, I think, can't eat at lot of that. But ah chat, yes, can gobble gobble non-stop.
